Restoril, sold under the generic name temazepam, is generally prescribed by doctors for the short-term management of insomnia, including difficulty falling and staying asleep.
Restoril is an anti-anxiety medication and belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Other benzodiazepines include diazepam (Valium), alprazolam (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin) flurazepam (Dalmane), and lorazepam (Ativan).
Like other benzodiazepines, Restoril works by enhancing the effects of gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter — a chemical substance that moderates signals moving from one nerve cell to another — which inhibits some of the activities of the brain to reduce anxiety and lead to longer sleep times.
